Navigating the aftermath of a broken home is a deeply personal journey, one that requires both inner strength and external support. Recently, I had the honor of hosting Dr. Karin Luis on the High Vibe Home podcast, where we delved into this sensitive topic. Dr. Karin, a transformational coach with a wealth of experience in guiding individuals through emotional chaos towards peace, shared some profound insights on healing after a broken home.

Healing from a broken home is often a topic left to the shadows.

What happens post divorce? Heartbreak? Infidelity?

Do you keep the couch, bed, and apartment or do you move your entire life as a result of this change.

On the podcast with Dr. Karin I was inspired to discuss the often shadow side of our homes, the things that get left behind from old lovers and partners and what to do next. If you're currently navigating this change, my heart is with you and I hope this episode and blog with help you in remembering that you aren't alone.

Here are five ways to help you heal after a broken home:

1. Embrace the Chaos and Find Your Peace

Dr. Karin emphasized the importance of acknowledging the chaos that often accompanies a broken home. Whether it’s the emotional turmoil or the physical disruption of moving or rearranging your living space, accepting that chaos is a part of the healing process is crucial. Rather than resisting it, Dr. Karin suggests finding moments of peace amidst the chaos. This could be through meditation, spending time in nature, or simply creating a quiet, sacred space in your home where you can retreat and recharge.

*Create a calm space, room, or even corner of your home if everything else in your home is chaotic.

2. Redefine Your Space

One of the most empowering steps after a breakup or divorce is reclaiming your home environment. Dr. Karin shared how she transformed her space after her marriage ended, turning her dining room into a bold statement of her true self. She filled it with vibrant colors and patterns that resonated with her soul, creating a space that was undeniably hers. This process of redefining your space helps in shedding the old and embracing the new, allowing your home to become a reflection of your current self rather than a reminder of past pain.

3. Create a ‘Happy Wall’

Dr. Karin introduced a simple yet powerful concept she calls the "Happy Wall." After her breakup, she found solace in surrounding herself with images of joy. She printed photos of herself in happy moments, with friends, or doing activities that brought her peace, and placed them on a wall where she could see them every day. This visual representation of happiness serves as a constant reminder of the good times and the life you are rebuilding. It’s a way to rewrite the story of your home, infusing it with positivity and hope.

4. Listen to Your Intuition

When it comes to relationships and the spaces we share, Dr. Karin urges us to listen to our intuition. She reflected on how, in hindsight, her second marriage was misaligned in many ways, including their approach to their home. She now sees the importance of paying attention to those subtle signs—like discomfort with how a partner decorates or maintains a space—as they can be indicators of deeper misalignments. Trusting your intuition not only helps in choosing the right partner but also in creating a home environment that supports your well-being.

5. Simplify and Declutter

A significant part of healing, according to Dr. Karin, involves simplifying your life and decluttering your space. After her divorce, she went through a Marie Kondo-inspired process, asking herself if each item in her home brought her joy. This exercise wasn’t just about getting rid of things but about consciously deciding what she wanted to carry into her new life. Simplifying your space can mirror the internal process of letting go of emotional baggage, making room for new, positive experiences.
